Decatur Salutes Hometown Heroes

Decatur honored 12 Hometown Heroes in 2009 for contributions made to the Decatur community: Bill and Vicki Ainslie, Michelle Bray, Bill Bryson, Greg and Nicole Coleson, Mary and Bill Flad, Gary Kronick, Dot Moye, Mercedes Pasqualetti, and Vernita Pinto. They are pictured below at the December meeting of the Decatur Business Association.

Decatur started its Hometown Heroes program in 1996 at the close of the Hometown to the World Festival held during the Olympics. The 14-day festival was a success because of the hundreds of volunteers who helped. At the close of the festival, the City Commission honored the volunteers and since then the Hometown Hero awards have been presented annually.

With the 2009 presentation, Decatur has designated 217 Hometown Heroes. For detailed information about the Hometown Heroes and their contributions to the community visit the 2009 Hometown Hero page.

Plaques with photos of each year of Hometown Heroes are displayed outside the City Commission Meeting Room in City Hall, 509 N. McDonough St.

About the Decatur Focus
The Decatur Focus is the official newsletter of the City of Decatur. Supported by the City of Decatur, the Decatur Business Association and the Decatur Downtown Development Authority, the Focus is published 10 times per year and mailed to every household, business and professional license-holder in the City. January/February and July/August are combined issues.

The Decatur Focus is filled with announcements and information about the City of Decatur including City services, downtown development issues, school news, business news, and news about individual residents and neighborhood associations. The purpose of the newsletter is to promote the City and encourage the exchange of information among residents, business owners, and the school system.

Submissions are encouraged and should be submitted by the first of the month prior to the month of publication (i.e., information that appears in the January issue should be submitted by December 1). The Decatur Focus also accepts advertising. For information about ad rates, download an ad rate card or call 404-371-8386.
