Communications Officer
Starting Salary: $29,120-$30,596 Annually DOQ Department: Police Department (E-911), 420 W. Trinity Place Work Hours: 8-hour rotating shift work; weekends and holidays required Vacancies: Two positions
Nature of Work This is telecommunications work monitoring City service radios, answering incoming telephone calls and dispatching emergency services, personnel, and equipment. Work involves the operation of radios, telephones, alarm board, computer terminals and printers and recording equipment. Police, fire, emergency service and animal control calls are received 24 hours every day from the public. The position also monitors radios for status of City employees and calls. State and national crime information networks are maintained and records for all calls are established. Work is reviewed while in progress and through evaluation of records and reports.
Major Responsibilities Answers emergency and non-emergency calls from citizens; obtains vital information; refers callers to appropriate departments and/or contacts agencies and obtains assistance for caller. Operates a two-way radio to provide a lifeline of support for officers in the field; monitors fire and burglary alarm panel; dispatches personnel to investigate incidents or requests for service; relays information to officers and superiors; receives reports from mobile units. Monitors radio communications of area and state police; identifies information relative to the City; informs appropriate personnel. Maintains, updates and files all pertinent logs, information cards, tapes and other records and documents daily. Operates GCIC/NCIC computer; secures and enters information on stolen vehicles, articles, guns, wanted and missing persons, driving and criminal histories, etc. Operates in-house computer to enter incoming incident reports, accident reports and traffic citations; processes and files reports and citations according to standard procedure. Receives monies for payments of fines, bonds and parking tickets; issues receipts; accounts for and deposits monies. Assists the Clerk of Court by typing court calendar and processing warrant and suspension letters; runs criminal histories for cases; assembles cases according to court schedule; relays disposition of cases to relevant state agencies. Performs general office duties including but not limited to filing, copying, typing and distributing reports, mail and other documents. Performs related work as necessary.
Desirable Qualifications HS diploma or equivalent. Some knowledge of public safety rules, regulations, terminology, methods of operation, and police, fire, and ambulance dispatch procedures. Some knowledge of telephone and radio operating requirements and techniques. Some knowledge of or the ability to learn the street system and geography of the City and the location of important buildings and areas. Ability to speak in a clear, well-modulated voice, which is easily understood over the telephone and radio is essential. Must be able to multi-task, and have the ability to make quick and sound decisions, and communicate clearly and effectively orally in crisis situations. Ability to deal courteously and diplomatically with coworkers and the general public. Ability to type proficiently and accurately. Ability to produce legible handwritten material. Ability to perform basic math calculations.
Other Requirements Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver's license (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR). Must be certified as a terminal operator within six months of employment. Must have no record of any felony conviction and pass a background investigation, pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Full-time Site Director (grades k-3)
Starting Salary Range: $25,792-$27,727 Annually (DOQ) Location: Children & Youth Services Work Hours: School Days; Monday-Friday, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm Summer Camp: Monday-Friday,7:30 am to 6:00 pm SOME EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS REQUIRED
Nature of Work This is responsible work involving the coordination, planning and implementation of recreational activities and supervision of counselors and participants. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Assistant Program Supervisor of Children and Youth Services, and the general supervision of the Program Supervisor. Work requires supervision of after-school and summer camp programs with some evening and weekend hours required.
Major Responsibilities & Duties Plan and implement recreational, educational and cultural activities and special events for after-school program. Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that allows for getting along with customers, clients, co-workers and management. Recruit students to increase and maintain enrollment. Prepare and implement lesson plans; attend regular meetings with an academic coordinator; meet with Academic Enrichment Coordinator as needed; meet with school coordinating counsel monthly, coordinate staff support of enrichment, technology and academic activities; establish a Parent Advisory Team (PAC) which meets quarterly; participate in Assessing School Age Quality Advisory Team for self study; ensure that an improvement plan is developed and implemented at the site; maintain site to meet and/or exceed Child Care Licensing standards where possible; provide supervision of counselors and participants; prepare weekly newsletters for distribution to families; plan service learning projects when appropriate. Plan and implement recreational, educational and cultural activities and special events for summer camp. Arrange speakers and special programs for site; conduct and/or coordinate daily community time and/or daily camp assemblies; ensure that campers are supervised during free swim; coordinate activities with all staff including special instructors during summer camp; coordinate visits to the Decatur Library. Ensure that counselors maintain discipline for their participants within guidelines of the program. Consult with Program Supervisor and Assistant Program Supervisor on programming and discipline; establish and maintain positive lines of communication with parents/guardians of assigned participants, including weekly newsletter articles and phone calls to parents when appropriate; make written reports on any inappropriate action by counselors to Program Supervisor. Provide periodic feedback to staff and complete written evaluations at least twice per year; coordinate program evaluations through parents and participants. Maintain energetic and enthusiastic demeanor; help develop summer camp and after school orientation. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desirable Qualifications Minimum of two years of college credit in education or related field and/or two years of experience in an after school/summer camp setting; and/or current credits in after school programming or management. Candidates without a degree must be willing to return to school and attain a minimum of a Technical Certificate of Credit within one year. Must have no convictions involving moral turpitude; possess a valid State of Georgia driver's license (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR). Should have personal vehicle to drive for business on a mileage reimbursement basis. Ability to occasionally lift, carry, bend, twist and climb in order to set up equipment and facilities, and participating in recreational activities with the participants. Ability to work in a variety of extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time.

Police Officer 1
Starting Annual Salary Ranges: $36,275 (HS diploma and no P.O.S.T. certification) $38,084 ( P.O.S.T. certified or four-year college degree) $40,996-$45,219 (Depending on number of years P.O.S.T. certified and four-year college degree)
In addition to the increased starting salary, officers hired under the lateral entry program who have at least 3-5 years of qualified experience will earn vacation leave at an accelerated rate.
Location: Decatur Police Department (420 W. Trinity Place)
Work Hours: 12-hour shift work, weekends and holidays (will receive every other weekend off)
Nature of Work This is general law enforcement work of protecting life and property and enforcing laws and ordinances. Work involves routine patrol work such as responding to emergency calls, citizen complaints and alarms. Duties include preliminary investigations, special detail assignments, administrative duties and other special assignments and gives specific instructions and assistance when guidance or patrol backup is needed. Work requires independent judgement and discretion in difficult or unusual situations. Work involves personal danger.
Major Responsibilities and Duties Patrols the City to provide a visible deterrent in uniform and in marked cars and to enforce laws and ordinances and protect life and property; monitors commercial and residential areas for signs of criminal activity; patrols for suspicious persons or vehicles. Enforces traffic laws through issuance of traffic citations and warnings; routinely inspects roadways, bridges and traffic signals and signs to find and report hazardous conditions. Reports buildings, vehicles or equipment that is not secured; ensures the safety and well-being of all employees on duty; learns employees' work patterns and alerts them to possible suspects and crime prevention. Responds to calls for assistance, disturbance calls and complaints of crimes; enforces federal, state and local laws by performing warrant, felony or misdemeanor arrests; protects the civil rights of persons in custody. Investigates traffic accidents by establishing point of impact, interviewing witnesses and collecting, preserving and packaging evidence; detects drunk drivers and performs sobriety evaluations; books DUI suspects. Serves as first responder to provide aid and assistance to victims of traffic and other accidents; assists fire and emergency medical services in treating and transporting victims. Maintains assigned uniform, vehicle and equipment in accordance with departmental policy and procedures. May serve as an Animal Control Officer; enforces leash law ordinances; issues citations and failure to obey summons; picks up stray animals. Performs related work as necessary.
Desirable Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Some knowledge of or the ability to learn the geography of the City and the location of important buildings and areas. Skill in the use of firearms. Ability to learn law enforcement methods, procedures and techniques and to apply such knowledge to specific situations. Ability to deal courteously and fairly with the public. Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
Other Requirements Non-certified police officers must successfully complete state-mandated basic police officer training (P.O.S.T. ) within 12 months of date of employment. Must be 21 years of age or older. Must be a citizen of the United States. Must have no record of any felony conviction. Must be free of any physical, emotional or mental condition which will adversely affect ability to perform the duties or exercise the powers of a Police Officer. Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver's license (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR). Must be able to pass a written exam (non-certified applicants), background investigation, oral interview, psychological exam, physical agility, voice stress analysis, and pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.
*Georgia P.O.S.T. certified applicants are not required to take the written assessment.*
