Adair Street Traffic Calming Initiative

Phase 1 of the Adair Street traffic calming plan is described below. If approved by the City Commission, the work will be completed during this year’s street resurfacing program.

Significant features of the recommended plan include the following:

  • New raised crosswalks are installed across Adair Street at Hibernia Avenue and Emerson Avenue. Existing speed humps and speed tables are rebuilt.
  • On-street parking between Cottonwood Place and West Ponce de Leon Avenue is shifted to the east side of Adair Street. This will create more on-street parking and the off-set should help slow traffic.
  • A “DON’T BLOCK THE BOX” pavement treatment is installed on West Ponce at Adair, with a new crosswalk on the west side of the intersection.
  • “Sharrows” (on-street share-the-road pavement markings to help accommodate bicyclists) installed on Adair Street.
  • New traffic control signage and additional streetlights at key locations.

The recommended traffic calming improvements do not include an extension of the sidewalk on the west side of the 300 block of Adair Street. This needs further study before a recommendation can be made to the City Commission.

One of the highest priorities expressed during the traffic calming initiative is to have the DeKalb County Watershed Management utilities repaired, the steel plates removed, the potholes repaired and the surface of Adair Street restored. A contract for street repairs and resurfacing was approved by the City Commissioners in August, 2023. This work will begin later this fall.

Traffic calming alternatives were discussed in workshops and open houses in December 2022 and March 2023 at Atlanta Friends Meeting, 701 West Howard Avenue. Residents were asked for comments, suggestions, and to help plan for pedestrian safety and traffic calming improvements in the Adair Street corridor. Traffic calming studies and plans that were presented at the community meetings are below.
